TAKING A STAR TOURS TRIP TO CRAIT, BATUU, AND MORE AT DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

On November 17, a group of select journalists were invited to experience the latest update to the popular Star Tours attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It was an opportunity to visit one of the newest locations in the Star Wars universe, Crait, along with more locations and surprises. Not only did Star Tours deliver, but also so did Hollywood Studios, which showcases a bevy of Star Wars themed opportunities for fans and theme park goers alike. StarWars.com went along for the ride. Early in the morning, we went through the front gates of the theme park (before it was open to the general public), and headed straight for Star Tours. As the ride started, and our StarSpeeder left the hangar, Rey could be seen in the distance as we made a quick exit through a barrage of First Order TIEs and Star Destroyers. Our first stop (Star Tours has randomized different locales in the Star Wars universe since May 2011) led to Jakku (which has been an option on the attraction since Novemb

HOW JEDI CHALLENGES BRINGS STAR WARS TO LIFE AT HOME

For anyone who has ever loved Star Wars video games — or even just loved the Star Wars films — there’s really been only one dream: to experience Star Wars as if you were in it. As if it was real. To hold a lightsaber in your hands and battle Darth Vader, standing before you. Or even to play the monster-filled holographic game from Star Wars: A New Hope — the one that we learn inspires Chewbacca to pull droids’ arms out of their sockets. With Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, we’re a step closer to that dream. (Droids beware.) Available today for $199.99, Jedi Challenges from Lenovo and Disney is a smartphone-powered augmented reality experience and a wonder to play. Included out of the box are a headset, lightsaber controller, and tracking beacon. Download the official app, put your phone in the headset, turn on the tracking beacon (which tells the app where your floor is, literally grounding the visuals), grab your Jedi weapon, and you’re off. NNEDI OKORAFOR ON GIVING THE DIANOGA A SOUL IN FROM A CERTAIN POINT OF VIEW

This article is the second installment in a special 3-part author interview series in honor of Star Wars Reads and last week’s release of the landmark Star Wars anthology, From a Certain Point of View. In case you missed it, be sure to read our interview with Meg Cabot. There’s something alive in here! The captive beasts of the Star Wars galaxy are a mysterious lot, a weirdly wonderful menagerie of creatures who are misunderstood, marginalized, and regarded as monsters. But Nnedi Okorafor is about to change that, at least for one infamous garbage dweller. Okorafor has earned international acclaim as an award-winning novelist melding African culture with elements of science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism. Now as part of the all-star list of authors in the new From a Certain Point of View anthology, Okorafor takes us into the garbage chute in “The Baptist,” lending her stunning imagination and elegant storytelling to bring a sense of dignity and depth to an unlikely hero — the

With the release of From a Certain Point of View last week, we get to experience Star Wars in a whole new way with 40 short stories penned by 43 different authors and told from 40 very unique perspectives. On Saturday, 19 of those wordherders gathered for a special edition, sold-out panel during New York Comic Con moderated by the Lucasfilm Story Group ‘s own Pablo Hidalgo, who also contributed to the tome. (Marc Thompson, longtime Star Wars audiobook reader, also delivered a killer reading of Gary D. Schmidt’s “There is Another,” nailing the voices of Yoda and Ben Kenobi.) StarWars.com gathered some of the highlights and insights about shining a spotlight on Force ghosts, cantina creatures, and other my

MOST IMPRESSIVE FANS: MARTIN CREANEY’S INCREDIBLE WOODEN MILLENNIUM FALCON SCULPTURE

Most Impressive Fans is a feature highlighting the amazing creativity of Star Wars devotees, from cosplay to props. If there’s a fearless and inventive fan out there, we’ll highlight them here. Han Solo’s beloved ship has been called a hunk of junk. A bucket of bolts. Garbage. Add to the list: “a huge, bloody monstrosity.” That’s Martin Creaney’s description of his own massive Millennium Falcon sculpture, a 6-foot-long, 5-foot-wide wooden behemoth on display inside his home in Australia. The former woodworker-by-trade earned the right to christen his ship after he built the hulking freighter over 15 months. He made all the special modifications himself, “though I doubt that I’ll ever truly consider it finished,” he says. With a strip of glowing backlights, a rotating laser cannon and sensor dish, and the pristine finish that gives the solid timber piece a wholly unique look, the sculpture is also a work of art. So much so, this summer it occupied the corner of a gallery near

5 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE STAR WARS REBELS SEASON FOUR TRAILER

We’ve got a new look at Star Wars Rebels’ final season in the form of a spectacular trailer. It’s a densely-packed three minutes, providing a pretty good idea of the tone we can expect as the story of Rebels comes to a close. There’s Mandalorian action, Rukh taking on Hera, and some Big Wolves. But five things in particular stand out and have me pondering what’s in store for the Ghost crew. 1. Lock S-foils in attack position. It was good to see those X-wings drop out of hyperspace in the first trailer. It was GREAT to see them split into their iconic configuration and dive in to take on the Empire. 2. Kanera. For my credits, Kanan and Hera have the most well-crafted romantic relationship in the entire Star Wars saga. It’s built upon a deep and abiding friendship that’s forged a trust and understanding greater than any other couple in the galaxy. To see it moved forward so openly in this trailer makes me smile and dare to hope that there are good times ahead for this pair

7 THINGS ABOUT NIGHTWATCHER WORMS

For a somewhat desolate planet, Jakku has a lot happening on its scalding surface. Life has found a way in the form of humanoid residents and creatures such as happabores, steelpeckers, and nightwatcher worms. The latter, also known as sandborers or Arconan night terrors, roam beneath the sand in search of sustenance. The nightwatcher’s head stalk with threatening-looking red eyes first appeared in The Force Awakens; recently, Forces of Destiny showed us the mass of the full worm hiding out of view. From the design to the creature’s hunting tendencies, here are seven things you might not know about the nightwatcher worm — with exclusive insights from Brad Rau, Forces of Destiny director. 1. Puppet talk. Only the head stalk of the nightwatcher worm appears in The Force Awakens — though at one point the worm was going to be responsible for swallowing Poe and Finn’s stolen TIE fighter in the Sinking Fields — so they needed a simple solution. Creature effects creative supe

In The Playlist, we’ll curate select installments of Star Wars that will give you that greater understanding of a specific topic. Consider it your own Jedi Archives — or cheat sheet for your Jedi midterms. The Darksaber is a fabled weapon in the world of Star Wars and has been a symbol of Mandalorian power for generations. When it first appeared in the Star Wars timeline, it was a stunning weapon of mystery and power. Now, we know it to be so much more. Here is your guide to one of the most unique lightsabers in the Star Wars mythos. SWTOR CREDITS 1. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (“The Mandalore Plot” – Season 2, Episode 12; “Voyage of Temptation” – Season 2, Episode 13; “Duchess of Mandalore” – Season 2, Episode 14) — In its first appearance, the Darksaber is wielded by Pre Vizsla, the leader of Death Watch, a splinter group of Mandalorians. 2. JABBA’S EYES – AND YOUR DESTINY – AWAIT YOU AT STAR WARS IDENTITIES

Two people so similar — bound by blood, reared in the unforgiving desert of Tatooine, strong in the Force but for so long lacking the teaching and discipline — are set on wildly divergent courses by the choices they make along the way. This is the message at the heart of Star Wars Identities, a traveling exhibit on display at The O2 on London’s waterfront until September 3, examining the evolution of characters both in-universe and behind the scenes, with a healthy dose of costumes, maquettes, and other artifacts, including a treasure trove of original Ralph McQuarrie paintings. SWTOR CREDITS The interactive exhibit — aimed at children 9-12 but thoroughly enjoyable for all ages — has been on the road since 2012, a collaboration with Montreal-based X3 Productions that weaves a scientific and anthropological storyline through some very familiar faces and scenes.  The moral of the exhibition’s storyline is deceptively simple: “It’s the choices that you make that shape you,” s
