STAR WARS REBELS: "OUT OF DARKNESS" REVIEW

There’s still plenty to learn about the characters on Star Wars Rebels, and “Out of Darkness” gave us our first little hints at Sabine's history. As it turns out, she was enrolled at the Mandalorian Imperial Academy at one point. There’s still plenty to learn, as we only got vague mentions of “what happened when I was a cadet” and heard that Sabine once “followed orders blindly and it was a nightmare”, but it is intriguing to ponder – insinuating she may have participated in doing something that turned out to be a notably terrible act of some kind.

Star Wars Rebels: Tiya Sircar on Sabine's Past

I do wish there was a bit more time spent between with Sabine and Hera just chatting before those creatures attacked, as I enjoyed spending time with these two bonding away from the rest of the crew – but it was rather quick that they were fighting for their life.

But that fight was pretty cool. There were some nice visuals here, from those colorful explosions caused by Sabine to an awesome shot of Sabine and Hera, in silhouette, standing on top of that ship, shooting at those creatures.

In general, this episode looked great, including some cool shots inside a TIE Fighter cockpit (shortly before that pilot’s life came to an end) and the asteroids floating right above the planet’s surface.

It was interesting to get some mentions of how the Ghost crew functions, with Hera lining up their missions, using sources she keeps to herself (and with Kanan, to an extent) – and intriguing how we heard, but didn’t see one such source. Hera trying to explain to Sabine that it wasn’t a matter of not trusting her but of needing to protect themselves in case anyone is captured was a compelling discussion to enter into this show, as Sabine struggled to see this point of view.

I find myself going back and forth with the Ezra/Zeb/Chopper squabbling/fighting, as some of it is certainly funny and enjoyable, but can also go on a bit too long and sometimes feel forced in. Hopefully this episode, and the incredibly dangerous situation this squabbling led to for their teammates, will lead to that calming down a bit.
