5 CLASSIC STAR WARS GAMES TO MATCH MODERN TASTES

Most of us have a favorite genre of games. From RPGs to shooters, we’re drawn to titles that are familiar and fun. For some of us this means hitting up the next Call of Duty or Battlefield, while for others it’s checking out every new space flight simulator that comes out, such as Elite: Dangerous or the upcoming Star Citizen. After all, just because we’re Star Wars fans doesn’t mean we only play Star Wars games.
So, in lieu of simply waiting for the 2015 Star Wars: Battlefront, allow me to make some classic Star Wars game recommendations for fans of these other recent or upcoming major games.
1. If You Like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter or Rainbow Six Vegas, Try Star Wars: Republic Commando
Star Wars: Republic Commando hits on the same notes as Ubisoft’s fantastic shooters. It has an awesome and intuitive system for giving commands to your fellow clone troopers (complete with visual representation of what your soldiers will do via classic Star Wars holograms), and makes you feel like you’re on the world’s best S.W.A.T. team as you execute breaching maneuvers on blast doors. Just like in other squad-based games, you’re not only responsible for your own life, but that of your men. By the end of the campaign you not only better understand the plot of the prequel films, but you also come to know and appreciate the unique personalities of each member of your squad.
2. If You Can’t Wait to Play Battlefield: Hardline, Try Star Wars: Battlefront II
Sure, a new Star Wars: Battlefront is coming out later this year, but the old one is loved to this day by fans for a reason. Just like Battlefield you’ve got large maps with a lot of enemies, all of whom can be on foot, in vehicles, or, in the case of some maps, flying through space. It’s one of the best takes on the large-scale galactic war we hear so much about in the films, and by far one of the most addictive multiplayer experiences from the previous generation. There’s a reason for the hype behind the next title in the franchise, and playing this will show you why.
3. If You Like StarCraft II or Company of Heroes II, Try Star Wars: Empire at War
So you’re not the type who wants to play the hero, but rather the master tactician, eh? Like these other fantastic real-time strategy games, Empire at War gives you intimate command over large armies. From waging war on the ground to commanding fleets in space, this is the closest you’ll get to becoming a General in the Galactic Rebellion against the Empire. Unless you want to be the bad guys, in which case Empire at War has you covered with a full Imperial campaign as well.
4. If You Can’t Wait to Play the Next Mass Effect, Try Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
While playing as Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard was incredible, developer BioWare was crafting beautiful RPGs like it years before with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Not only do you get the same sort of multiple-choice, choose-your-own-adventure like story, but it’s set in the Star Wars universe. Heck, you even get to build up an awesome team just like in Mass Effect 2, jetsetting across the galaxy in an awesome adventure that introduces a memorable cast of characters that respond to the choices you make. If you’ve ever wondered why people practically foam at the mouth when the next BioWare RPG gets announced, the explanation is simple: play Knights of the Old Republic.
5. If You Like Elite: Dangerous, Try Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
Elite: Dangerous places you behind the controls of very complex ships. From distributing power to systems to learning how to properly check scanners for enemy ships, it’s the closest many of us have come to piloting our own star fighter for years. Still, if you’re looking for a similar game set in the Star Wars saga, then you should look no further than Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. Here you can pilot an array of popular ships including X-wings, Y-wings, and more. You can even set up your own battles, putting yourself up against, say, a Star Destroyer completely on your own. If piloting Alliance fighters isn’t for you, I humbly suggest you try out Alliance’s predecessor, Star Wars: TIE Fighter.
